Grass Track Meeting 18th May 2009

The weather was again dry and sunny although at times it felt as though last Monday’s strong breeze had strengthened and was hard work for the riders down the back straight.
There was an even better attendance than last week.

he first event was a 150 metre scratch race for the 5-7 year age group with Harrison Brock winning just ahead of Edward Bateman, Daniel Hall, Liam Paton, Toby Price, Theo Warren, Emily Jackson and Cameron Douglas. When this group raced again over the same distance the race was won by Toby Price, from Liam, Harrison and Daniel.
Group two was a freewheel race for eight to ten year olds and the first was a 300 metre scratch race and this was won by Jordon West from Hannah West, Adam Looker, Max Watts, Katy Bateman, Beth Coiley and Tom Disney. Group three was a fixed wheel race for eight to ten year olds and this was won by Sam Jackson from Joe Jackson, Louisa Looker, Caitlin Douglas, Jacob Daniels, Lochie Hankin Appleby, Leon Sherlock Booth, Ellie Duley and Robert Mercer. Groups two and three then combined to try out the Kieran race with riders being paced round behind an imaginary motorbike (as this is how it is run in the Olympics when our Gold medal hero Chris Hoy came home with one of his three golds) before sprinting for the line. The final of the Kieran was won by Sam Jackson from Brother Joe, closely followed by Caitlin and Robert. Finally the middle group raced a "Devil" (the last two riders each half lap being eliminated). The fixed race was won by Adam from Jordon and Max and the freewheel race was won by Joe Jackson from Molly Bowen and Caitlin.
Group four consisted of the eleven year olds and upwards. This group firstly raced a 300 metre scratch event and a very tight sprint was won by James Jackson just ahead of Elliot Jarvis, Camilla West, Jonathan West and Bethan York. The older riders then tried their hand at a 600 metre team pursuit all trying to emulate the British gold medal winning team lead by Bradley Wiggins. All riders kept together sheltering from the wind but it was the team of Camilla, Jonathan, Brad Watts and William that finished ahead by 3 seconds. The older group finished with a Kieran race which was again won by James Jackson ahead of Elliott Jarvis from Jonathan, William, Camilla and Brad.
The evening finished with a fun relay race. Don't forget grass track continues every Monday at 6.15pm from 1st June until August 2009 - all you need is a cycle helmet and £1 entry. Further information from David Triggs 01206 571614.
