Audax U.K. was established in 1976 and now oversees all aspects of long-distance cycling events, and using a system of timed check-points, validates and records every successful ride. There are hundreds of events held in all parts of the British Isles throughout the year at popular distances ranging from 50Km. to 600Km. Events are open to all cyclists, although non-members have to pay an extra entry-fee (usually £1) to cover Insurance. There are advantages gained from full Audax membership – Annual Handbook/ Quarterly Magazine / Inclusion in AUK awards structure/ 3rd. Party Insurance whilst participating. All this is in addition to the satisfaction and comradeship that stems from belonging to the Worlds largest long-distance cycle-club.
Events are not races, but require the riders to complete the measured course at between 10 / 30 k.p.h average, including stops. They are therefore suitable for riders of all ages and ability. The challenge is threefold, firstly the route has to be navigated, secondly the information checks have to answered and thirdly your card must be time-stamped at other points enroute within certain limits. Routes are devised to favour quiet, scenic lanes as far as possible, although it is sometimes necessary to traverse or cross busy main roads. Any roadworthy machine may be ridden, but you find yourself more popular if you fit mudguards.
Every event is listed on the Website http://www.audax.uk.net – click Calendar to see full details – Date/Distance/Location/Start-time/Entry-fee/Organiser. It is also possible to down-load the obligatory entry form from the website.
